We stepped into this record store and were surrounded by endless music notes. Records across the ages from A-Z. Records that have made people feel things that they didn’t think they could ever feel. That’s music. Music makes us feel. I’m the type of bird that loves to feel. The good, the bad, I wanna feel it all, and I get by with a little help from my. . .music collection. I could be so heartbroken, alone, crying, and my first instinct is to lose myself in the scratch of electric guitars, solo pianos, Adele’s shaken voice, James Bay’s words. Basically anything that will make me cry harder, feel more. I guess I take away from Miss. Carrie Bradshaw when she says she is an ’emotional cutter’ . . . but I don’t look at this as a bad thing.
Music brings me to life. Not only the sad, but the good. Music makes me moooove. Music makes me smile, laugh, scream, whatever emotion there is, music makes me feel it. I took some time this past weekend to adventure home. I say adventure because if you live in Southern California and have the guts to brave the 91 freeway, then you understand where I’m coming from. I was homesick. I missed my family, and just being in my old house. When I first got home I ended up getting lost in watching One Direction Live in Milan for about an hour. This isn’t out of character, but I was also accompanied by my Dad . . . this isn’t out of character for him either. We were sitting there watching these girls just lose their absolute marbles over these boys. Screaming, crying, and I mean they were CRYINGGGG. The signs being held read, “you’ve changed my life”. Nonetheless my Dad and I thought these teenagers were absolute bonkers, and may have been laughing every time they showed a screaming teen on the telly, but it’s what music does to people! It effects them so deeply that it “changes their lives”.
I then continued my weekend with binge watching Greys Anatomy. Supes productive weekend, I know, you don’t have to tell me, but lemme tell you, I’m friggin’ exhausted from all the crying. Season 5 of Greys Anatomy should seriously come with a warning label saying, “WARNING, do not binge watch this season because you will be emotionally WRECKED”, and that I was. But I came to a conclusion that more than half the reason I was moved to tears, overflowing, stupid, unreasonable tears was not only the fake characters who are not real, or the lines being fed to the characters that are not real, but the damn background music Shonda Rimes chose to play!! If I hear another song by The Fray, The Civil Wars, or Bon Iver, I’m going to lose it.
Music is all around us! It’s your initial choice to turn away or turn it up. So listen and feel a little something deeper.
See the artists I love to listen to through the good and the bad below.
bring on the tears //
Adele :: I love the majority of her music. Her talent is unending, but the feeling she puts towards her music is untouchable. If you haven’t given her newest album 25 a listen, you should. Remedy & All I Ask are my two favorites from this album.
Bon Iver :: My brother-in-law introduced me to this lovely artist & he has easily become one of my absolute favorites. He always soothes my soul. Holocene is my everything.
Ben Howard :: Brock, Bree’s boyfriend, actually introduced both of us to him (him as in his Pandora station). I’ll never forget, we were all sitting on a lifeguard tower talking about music, and Brock mentioned Ben Howard and that we HAD to listen. Let’s just say, we have been in love ever since. It’s hard to choose my faves but the acoustic guitar strings in his song Everything make me feel some type of way. His radio station on Spotify is in my top 5, and my go-to when I write any blog.
Shawn Mendes :: Okay, but for serious, he is KILLING the game lately. At least for me he is . . and when I say killing, I mean he’s killing me softly & slowly with his new bluesy sound. He’s taken on the form of a John Mayer-esque and I totes dig it. I’m very much looking forward to his new album Illuminate, and my fave songs so far from it are Ruin, Don’t Be A Fool, & Mercy.
let’s groove //
5 Seconds of Summer :: Yup. No shame. If you know me, I totes dig these rockin’ dudes. I’ve only seen them perform about 5 times. . .no big deal. Whenever I just wanna rock out in the car, play my air guitar, and use my dashboard as a drum kit, I turn them UP. Currently my favorites from their newest album Sounds Good, Feels Good are Waste the Night & Castaway.
Rufus De Sol :: Freakin’ love their vibe. They make me wanna moooove. They have the type of music that I get lost in the beat. Close your eyes, and just feel it. Two faves amongst many others are Sundream & Like An Animal.
Fleetwood Mac :: When I just wanna be groovy, this band will always bring a smile to my face. If you ever ask me what my favorite song EVER is, which many people do, I still will always say Dreams. Fleetwood is timeless, and Stevie is a rockstar.
One Direction :: Yes. No, you did not read that wrong. Boy bands have a special place in my heart, and even though my heart misses Zayn dearly, this band always puts me in good spirits, and I have SO many solid memories connected to their songs, strange enough.
i’m diggin currently //
Chance The Rapper
i’m diggin always //
Florence & The Machine
As you can see, my music collection/selection varies. It can go super pop, to super coffee shop indie, but it completes me. I have tons of playlists & if you’re ever curious to see more music from me, follow me on Spotify . . . search “Makenzie Rae Jandro”. May I recommend my “all the feels” playlist if you REALLY wanna feel something.
