It’s one of my favorite holidays today! Who am I kidding? Every holiday seems to be my favorite. . .especially when there is delicious food involved and my family.
Today I am back home at my parents to prep dinner for our entire family who should be arriving sometime this afternoon to indulge in turkey, tofu-erky (half of my family is vegetarian), mashed potatoes and pies on pies! I absolutely love the chaos of the holiday season because it’s filled with so much love and family. In California, I have never experienced a classic “chilly” Thanksgiving, so usually our dinner looks involve something like this outfit so we can keep cool while we cook away in the 80+ degree heat.
After dinner is served we clean up and play games and enjoy dessert in the family room. Every year my family thinks. . .”maybe this year we could try the black friday sales,” and then around 10pm we head to bed with full bellies and decide that “next year” we’ll try the major sale day. This year, after reading articles on families and the disconnect we have, I have decided that the black friday deals might actually be somewhat toxic to our precious family time. My family is by no means perfect and we drive eachother nuts, but I am so thankful that we soak up every minute of the holidays to catch up on life and just relax. I love that there are some compaies this year participating in an ‘anti black friday’ so families connect with eachother or so you use your day off to get out and get active! The retail store, REI, is starting a new movement this year and they are encouring their loyal customers to get outside and get active on black friday instead of stressing out about saving a few bucks. I encourage you to avoid the crazy malls tomorrow and bond with your family, go on a hike, hit the beach, do a puzzle with your grandma, watch old family videos, go see a movie, or just stay in your pjs all day and eat left overs (an option I may be considering).
Don’t get me wrong. . . I LOVE a good deal, that’s why I will be shopping the major sales on Monday for Cyber Monday! I aslo really want to visit a few local shops on Saturday to support the local owners and their dreams on small business saturday, because dreamers are rad and locals are rad too.
