Coffee (n.) the magical substance that turns “leave me alone or die” into “good morning, honey!”
Truest of true statements right thurr my people. Currently sitting, making a a giant pot of my organic fair trade coffee, and listening to the coffeehouse playlist on Spotify. It’s lit my dudes.
Organic? Fair Trade? Oh my goodness, I’m so glad you asked about those two things . . . let’s have a little chat, shall we? I’ll never forget when Bree and I both met with holistic nutritionist, April Norris, and she told us if there was one thing that we were putting inside our bodies that needed to be organic it was coffee.
Me . . . hi, hello, how are you . . . being the coffee obsession-er that I proudly am was intrigued. I wasn’t raised in a particular “healthy” family that cared for the words like “organic”, “gluten free”, “non GMO” etc. BUT, don’t get me wrong because we weren’t eating fried everything, and fast food anything every night either. There was a balance, but the word “organic” never came up in conversation at our dinner table.
So I decided to do some research on Fair Trade Organic coffee, and what the difference there was between conventional coffee, and organic coffee. Pssh, lehh. me. tell. you, there’s a difference, and I hope after you read, or skim through this blog you think twice about starting your morning with . . . **singing** . . . Folgers in your cup . . . ja’feel? two questions. . .
What is “fair trade coffee” and why does it matter?
When you see a fair trade label on your coffee it simply means that we as consumers know that the farmers who grew the coffee are paid fairly, and that the organizations creating these trading partnerships are based on trust, respect, and transparency. Through fair trade, farmers earn better income, which allows them to hold on to their land, and continue to invest in quality produce! YAASSS. I don’t know about you, but it’s nice to know that someones hard work is being fairly treated, whilst I’m over here sipping on that hard work, and the hardest work I had to do was pack a filter, and push a button. #respect
What is organic coffee?
Organic coffee is coffee that farmers produce that cannot be grown with any type of synthetic substance. A.k.a pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and GMOs (dun dun DUN). Hate to break your pretty little hearts but Starbucks coffee, yeah, might wanna think twice before ordering that soy latte of death. Only 8.5% of their coffee is fair trade, and it’s filled with GMOs. No thanks. I love my life. Run along now. Also, to be certified organic 95% of the coffee beans have to be grown under organic conditions. So let’s cut to the chase. Over 12 billion pounds of coffee are produced annually. Holy chet that’s a big number, and a lot of coffee!! *heart eyes* But you need to be aware that conventional coffee is the most heavily chemically treated foods in the world. THE WORLD people. Not only does poor mother Earth suffer, but so do the humans that consume it (without even knowing it), and so do the farmers who are exposed to high levels of chemicals while spraying the crops.
Organic coffee means clean beans, air, land, and water. Mmm, tastes better already am I right? BONUS, organic coffee beans are richer in healthful antioxidants, so your body is not only stoked from caffeine, but gets an extra little boost in the right direction. If you were looking for a sign to switch to smarter, better, organic coffee, HERE IT IS. Right here . . . wassup, here’s the sign. *waves hands uncontrollably** Stawwppppp. We constantly strive to encourage you, and want to remind you babes that your body is a temple. Think of all it does for you! It freaking breathes for you, it moves for you . . . I mean your heart beats for you without you even having to think about it. Seems pretty selfless if you ask me. Ya know your heart doesn’t have to beat, blood doesn’t have to flow . . . are you going to just feed it chemicals and poison? . . . you should think about that. So c’mon! Show it some respect. If you love coffee the way I love coffee, give your body all types of that good, good.
And I know what you’re thinking . . . “but I don’t have that extra money to buy organic coffee”. Same dude, sammmeeeeee, BUT in the long haul think of it this way . . . spending $12 on a bag of beans is a lot cheaper than having to pay medical bills from the bloody doctors office because your body is filled with crap chemicals! Do it for the future you.
Just some food for thought, or coffee for thought for your Tuesday. Ha. See what I did there.
